PURPOSE:To increase the bonding strength of molecules to a substrate and to obtain the monomolecular film oriented with the molecules oriented in the same direction by treating the surface of the substrate to impart reactivity thereto and bringing functional groups into reaction with the surface of the substrate by using the specific molecules. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the substrate 1 is treated, by that, the reactivity is imparted to a treated layer 2. The molecules 3 having the two functional groups at both ends of the rigid molecular skeleton having >=15 angstrom length are used and one of the two functional groups is brought into reaction with the surface of the substrate 1, by that, the monomolecular film of the first layer is formed. Further, the molecules 4 having the two functional groups at both ends of the rigid molecular skeleton having >=15 angstrom length are used and one of the two functional groups is brought into reaction with the other functional group of the molecules constituting the monomolecular film of the lower layer, by that, the monomolecular film of the upper layer is formed. The reason that the length in the longitudinal direction of the molecular skeleton is limited to >=15 angstrom lies in that the control of the molecule orientation on the substrate 1 is difficult if the length is below 15 angstrom.
