A metal thin film type magnetic recording medium having a nonmagnetic support, a ferromagnetic metal thin film having a density of 3.0 to 6.0 which is formed on one surface of the nonmagnetic support, a hard carbon film which has Vickers hardness of 1000 to 5000 and is formed on the ferromagnetic metal thin layer from a mixture of an inert gas and at least one hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of mono-, di- and trialkylbenzenes having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in each alkyl group by a plasma CVD method, a lubricant layer formed on the hard carbon film, and a backcoating layer on the other surface of the nonmagnetic support, which is produced at high productivity and has improved still life. <IMAGE>
