PURPOSE:To enhance smoothness and durability by forming a magnetic recording layer contg. ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder on a nonmagnetic substrate, regulating the thickness of the recording layer to <=0.7mum and previously treating the solid powder existing in the recording layer with a coupling agent. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic recording layer contg. ferromagnetic powder dispersed in a binder is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate. The thickness of the recording layer is regulated to <=0.7mum. The solid powder existing in the recording layer is previously treated with a coupling agent having an amino group, an epoxy group, a hydroxyl group, a phosphoric acid group or an isocyanato group as a functional group which reacts with an org. matrix. When the coupling agent has an alkoxy group, the number (X) of the carbon atoms of the alkoxy group is allowed to satisfy Y<X<3Y (where Y is given by dividing the ionic radium of the core atom by the distance between carbon atoms). By this structure, satisfactory dispersibility and coatability are ensured and a magnetic recording medium excellent in smoothness and durability is obtd. |
