An improved process of preparing an oxygenate additive for motor fuels which contains isopropanol, diisopropyl ether and water, and wherein a hydrocarbon feed stock containing propane and propene is subjected to catalytic hydration under elevated pressure and temperature in a series of catalytic stages arranged in serial flow relationship with water being introduced into each catalytic stage in an amount to selectively control the catalytic conversion of propane and propene to isopropanol alcohol and diisopropyl respectively, and the isopropanol, diisopropyl ether and water leaving the catalytic stages is separated from unreacted feedstock.
|
