A second time point (tS), at which an alteration of at least one variable established by a sensor characterising the operational position of the gearbox, is determined. A third time point (tE), at which the gear changing operation ends, is determined. The amount of a first time span (DELTAt-list(tS-tO)) is determined between the first and second time points. The amount of a second time span (DELTAt-list(tE-tS) between the second and third time points is determined. The amounts of the actual values for the first and second time spans are compared with corresp. desired values. With a desired value deviation of at least one of the time spans in a following gear changing operation, at least one variable influencing the gear changing operation is altered, for the matching of the actual and desired value. ADVANTAGES - Carries out matching of variable characterising gear change operation according to situation, if deviations occur from original tuning. Can be implemented in existing automatic drives.
