A variable resistor or potentiometer has a contact movable along a layer resistance element 17a (Fig. 4), a succession of different resistive layers 17b, 17c, 17d being arranged adjacent the element 17a equipotential zones 16 extending at intervals across the layers, the resistive complex being adjusted to conform with a desired law by milling notches 18a, 18b. The resistive layers may be of conductive thermohardening resin or of metal and may give non- linear variations. One terminal 4 may be connected to diametrically opposite points 13 (Fig. 1), the moving contact may be a slider 7 and the equipotential bars 16 may be of metal deposited from a vapour or chemically. |
