A lens shutter type of camera is provided, having a photographing optical system (1) comprising a zoom lens system (L1, L2), a motor driven cam mechanism (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) for moving the photographing optical system (1, L1, L2) in a zoom range (20d, 21b), thereby varing the focal length of said optical system (1, L1, L2) and for moving said optical system (1, L1, L2) to and from an accommodating position (20a, 20b, 21a) where lenses (L1, L2) of said photographing optical system (1) are in a position behind said zoom range (20e, 21b). In that camera a code plate (90) is provided with an area (Pos2 to PosA) for obtaining focal length information of said optical system (1) and with a detecting area (Pos1) for detecting a transient state (20b) from said zoom range (20d, 21b) to said accommodating position (20a, 21a). The driving of said cam mechanism (14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) cannot be stopped when said detecting area (Pos1) signalises a position of the optical system (1, L1, L2) in said transient state (20b, 21a).
