The voltage transformer described has a rectifier for an a.c. input voltage and a switching converter which is pulsed by a pulse-width-modulated control signal at a significantly higher frequency than the a.c. input voltage. The invention calls for the rectified a.c. input voltage to be fed to the switching converter without using an energy-storage device (reservoir capacitor) acting at the frequency of the a.c. input voltage. For pulse-width modulation of the control signal, a controller is fitted to which are fed (a) the value of the current (Iactual) taken from the switching converter and (b) the value of an at least approximately sine<2>-shaped reference signal (Iref), the at least approximately sine<2>-shaped signal being synchronized with the a.c. input voltage.
