Compsns. comprise glycerol and a carrier. Liq. compsns. pref. comprise 0.05-50 (esp. 30) pts.wt. glycerol and 100 pts.wt. water, opt. with 2.8 pts.wt. NaHCO3 to counteract acidosis. Solid compsns. comprise glycerol and a solid carrier in a wt. ratio of 20:80 to 80:20, esp. 30:70, opt. with 0.01-1 wt.% Na tetraborate to counteract acidosis. The carrier comprises MgO, MgCO3, SiO2 and/or cellulosic or vegetable materials, e.g. bran or coarse-ground or flaked maize. USE/ADVANTAGE - The compsns. may be used to treat ruminants, e.g. cattle and sheep. The glycerol acts as a precursor for glucose biosynthesis, giving a rapid increase in blood sugar level, a long-lasting increase in insulin level, a redn. in blood free fatty acid levels, and a redn. in the concn. of ketone bodies in the blood.
