PURPOSE:To improve a contrast by preventing the coloration by a double refraction effect, thereby enabling a black and white display having high visibility. CONSTITUTION:A retardation of DELTAn1.d1 is provided on either one substrate of substrates or a retardation of total DELTAn1.d1 is provided on both substrates and the difference from the retardation DELTAn2.d2 of a liquid crystal layer is confined within the range expressed by equation. The retardation, DELTAn1.d1 of the substrate is attained by laminating the substrate itself or a resin film having the retardation DELTAn1.d1 on the substrate. The optical main axis of at least one substrate is arranged by being inclined to <=30 deg. from the normal of the smectic layer of the liquid crystal. In such a case, DELTAn1 denotes the double refractive index of the substrate; d1, denotes the gap of the substrate; DELTAn2 denotes the double refractive index of the liquid crystal layer; d2 denotes the gap of the liquid crystal layer, respectively. |
