PURPOSE:To run a vehicle at a constant speed (auto-cruise) without damaging the easy drivability by controlling the vehicle speed in accordance with the inter-vehicle distance to a preceding running vehicle or the relative speed based on a set target vehicle speed. CONSTITUTION:A controller 6 obtains the target inter-vehicle distance by the actual vehicle speed detected by an actual vehicle speed detecting means 2 till release of the operation when the operation start is detected by an operation start detecting means 3. The controller 6 compares this distance with the actual distance to the preceding running vehicle detected by an inter-vehicle distance detecting means 1 and obtains a vehicle speed variation based on the difference between them in the case of (target inter-vehicle distance)>(actual inter-vehicle distance). In the case of (target inter-vehicle distance)<(actual inter-vehicle distance), the vehicle speed variation is obtained based on the difference between a desired vehicle speed which is set by a target vehicle speed setting means 5 or is stored by the controller 6 itself and the actual vehicle speed. The controller 6 controls a throttle operating means 7, a gear position operating means 8, and a brake operating means 9 by this variation.
