Selective sec. S-alcohol prodn. from ketone - by incubating with new microbial dehydrogenase and NADH, useful as intermediates for biologically active cpds.

Prodn. of sec. 5-alcohol (I) comprises treating an asymmetric ketone (II) with an opt. immobilised microbial dehydrogenase (A) with NADH, then (I) is isolated by usual methods. Also new are microbial dehydrogenases specific, in presence of NADH, for redn. of (II) to (I). Pref. (A) are from Candida succiphilia; Rhodococcus erythropolis and Pseudonocardia thermophila, partic. the R.erythropolis strains 743 and 43297 (DSM 76971 and 6977). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful in synthesis of biologically active cpds. (pesticides), e.g. of compactin; beta-hydroxyalkanoic acids, oxaziridines, etc. They can now be prepd. relatively simply in high yield and of excellent purity.
