Fibrous moulding prodn. reinforced with e.g. metallic layer - by pressing two fibre mats with separator between, delaminating at separator, placing reinforcement on one mat and pressing second mat on top

A fibre moulding is produced with reinforcing inserts, and metal components in particular, by placing the reinforcement between two fibre mat layers and pressing to shape. In the process the two mats and an intermediate sepg. layer are pressed together in the first operation, the mats are then sepd. at the intermediate layer, the reinforcement is placed on one fibre mat and the other mat is applied on top. the intermediate layer is pref. made of polyester and/or viscose. Pref. a suitable mix of fibre materials is placed in a container (10a) and is brushed (12a) out through a screen (11a) on to a moving web (13) to form a mat (17a) passing over a vacuum chamber (14a) and then through a thicknessing rotor (16a). Excess material is drawn off and returned. A separating sheet, unreeled (28) and applied to the material (17a), is coated on the underside with release agent. A top layer (17b) of similar fibre material is applied (10b) and thickened similarly before the assembly is hot air heated (18) and passed between exhaust chambers. The material is then pressed between rollers (23). The rest of the process then continues as appropriate. ADVANTAGE - The method is quick and inexpensive. It produces an intermediate stage material.
