A composite bearing plate (16,18) for a fifth wheel (10) comprises a steel base plate (22) having a layer of polyurethane (24) bonded thereto presenting a bearing surface. The base plate (22) has a plurality of apertures (26) communicating with a plurality of corresponding apertures (20) in the polyurethane layer. These apertures (20,26) present an opening for welding the bearing plate (16,18) to the fifth wheel bearing surface (12). <IMAGE>
