Monoamides of dicarboxylic acids of formula (I) are new. Also claimed is the use of (I) are new. Also claimed is the use of (I) as a wetting agent in the prodn. and processing of textiles. In (I) R1 is 4-20C alkylor alkenyl; R2 is H, 1-12C alkyl; A-B is -CR3=CR4-, -CHR3-CHR4- or gp. of (II) or (III); R3 and R4 are H, 1-4C alkyl; R5 is H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, hydroxyl, sulphon, carboxyl or 1-4C alkoxycarboyl; n = 1-2; and X is H, alkali or alkaline earth metal or ammonium, opt. substd. with 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C hydroxy alkyl gps. More specifically, R1 is 6-16C alkyl; R2 is H, 6-10C alkyl; A-B is -CH=CH- or (II, R5 = H); and X is sodium, potassium, ammonium, triethanolammonium or triisopropanolammonium. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful as agents in the processing and treatment of the raw material, pref. cotton and/or cotton mixts. to impart the necessary absorptive capacity. A controlled ratio of hydrophillic to lypophillic structural elements in (I) allows rapid wetting and imparts surface activity and good aq. solubility with little foaming. (I) are crystalline, colourless, have low odour with good storability and are handlable.
