Poorly combustible or non-combustible foam materials (I) for the filling of openings in buildings, such as joints, wall cavities or intermediate spaces between building components to protect against fire is claimed. (I) contains an insulating layer former (II) within its pores or on all its surfaces, that swells in the event of a fire. Also clamined are (i) the prepn. of (I) by impregnation and/or covering of the foam with (II). (ii) the use of (I) to flame proof and seal openings within building and (iii) a process for the flame proofing and sealing of openings within buildings by the introduction of one or more (I). USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) inhibit the ingress of fire, smoke and heat into joints, wall cavities or intermediate spaces between building components. (I) are easy to apply to openings, form a good seal and have improved flame proofing properties by forming a solid and stable blocking layer in the event of a fire.
