<p>Generation of a cloured layer of pre-set intensity on the surface of aluminium containing workpieces is effected by anodising. During the treatment the colouring is continuously monitored by an instrument preferably a photometer, and the treatment is stopped when the desired intensity of colouring has been reached. The preferred method consists of employing a standard surface speciment piece which is subjected to the same environmental conditions as the workpiece, the colouring being measured by a second instrument positioned identically relative to the surface as the first instrument and monitoring the actual workpiece. When the values obtained by both instruments are identical the enodising treatment is broken off. A method based on direct measurement discounts the many variations due to the material and the bath which make it impossible to produce repeatable anodising workcycles resulting in the same degree of colouring.</p> |
