1,214,032. Rack-and-pinion gearing; bearings; resilient bush mountings. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. 6 Feb., 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 5955/68. Headings F2A, F2Q and F2S. In a vehicle rack-and-pinion steering mechanism having a rack bar 3 supported for axial movement in a casing 1 by a spring-loaded piston 6 opposite the pinion 5 and, at its end remote from the pinion, by a resilient bearing 12, flexible bellows 8, 9 providing sealed connections between the casing and the ends of the rack bar, the bearing 12 comprises a rigid annular member surrounding the rack bar and locating between the bar 3 and the housing 1 at least one member of elastomeric material which forms a communication passage between the two bellows. In Fig. 2, the bearing comprises a rubber sleeve 16 vulcanized to an outer metal ring 15 and an inner metal split sleeve 14, a passage 18 being formed axially through the sleeve 16. In Fig. 4, elastomeric blocks 19 are held in a pressed metal cage 21. In Fig. 7, circumferentially spaced elastomeric blocks 24 are secured in an annular groove 23 of a metal ring 22. In Fig. 8, elastomeric blocks 27 are mounted between outer and inner rings 25, 26 which are connected together at one end by a web (28) (Fig. 9, not shown). Holes 29 in the web open into spaces between the blocks 27. In any embodiment, rigid plastics rings may replace the metal rings. |
