The i.c. engine consists of three cylinders (19) with reciprocating pistons (23), driving a rotor or inclined disc (2) with bearings (3, 4) surrounded by ball and socket (6, 9) or universal joints which allows the pistons to be connected to the rotor or disc by rods (12) which oscillate only slightly. The joints are mounted on a ring (5) with teeth (16) which mesh with a second ring (17) with an equal number of teeth on the engine casing end plate (18). The two toothed rings allow the pistons to reciprocate while maintaining the positions of the connecting rods, and the valves (25) for all the cylinders are controlled by a single rotary cam (35). ADVANTAGE - Design simplicity and reduced friction.
