A machine for cutting blocks or flat sheets of foam, mineral wool, plastics, felt etc. has (a) a flexible base on which the work rests and which is held taut during operations (b) a carriage moving along the length of the base on tracks, with guides for the base to form moving slots in both longitudinal and transverse directions to allow the cutter tool to pass through the plane of the base (c) a tool mounting which can move on the carriage parallel to the plane of the base and across its length, and a cutter which passes through the plane of the base to cut material in two directions, and (d) supports to hold the base in its plane, these being located on both sides of the moving slot. The base is a band which is divided by the guides to form two ends, each of which has winding drum beneath the plane of the band on the carriage so that the end of the band can be reeled up or unreeled with the motion of the carriage which accpanies the cutting operation; at least during cutting operations the band is held or clamped on to the frame of the machine near the ends of the carriage movements, parallel members support the two parts of the band across its length and can be set apart at distances varied by links; these members are bars, are fixed to the carriage both sides of the moving slot, and can be moved in succession with the carriage along the length of the band on fixed guides parallel to the band. ADVANTAGE - The machine produces accurate cuts even at high operating speeds. It is partic. suitable for use with low density materials in large thicknesses.
