The sunshade has a hollow central pole (8) from whose upper end protrudes the lifting mechanism (20), with braces (22) attached to the support stays (12,14) of the fabric (B), the braces being pivoted at each end. The lifting mechanism is on a spindle (26) driven by a motor (A) built into the base (6) of the pole. An auxiliary hand-operated drive is provided between the motor and the spindle. There is a dog clutch-type coupling between the output side of the hand-operated drive and the input side of the spindle with a similar coupling between the motor/gearbox output and the input side of the hand-operated drive. The gearbox for the motor is a continuously-variable friction drive. ADVANTAGE - Compact, easy assembly and capable of hand operation if necessary.
