A wavelength tuned laser has a solid state substrate (1) and a resonator with distributed feedback coupling having an active layer (2) and a cover surface (3). The resonator is divided into primary (11) and secondary (12,13) sections and surface electrodes (14a,14b,14c) are used to control the current density in the sections independently of each other. The heating resistance in the first section is greater than in the second section. This results in the temperature in the first section changing more than that of the second section. ADVANTAGE - Suppresses thermal effects, e.g. red shift.
