PURPOSE:To provide a novel compound which is useful as an intermediate for agrochemicals and medicines. CONSTITUTION:A compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl), for example, 2- hydroxy-5-(methylaminomethyl)pyridine. The compound of formula I is obtained by allowing the culture medium of a microorganism in Arthrobacter as an enzyme source to act on 3-(alkylaminomethyl)pyridine at 5 to 40 deg.C and 5 to 10 pH for 10 days. The compound of formula I is, for example, allowed to react with an alkylating agent such as dimethyl sulfate to give 2-me thoxy-5-(alkylaminomethyl)pyridine and an insecticide can be produced therefrom. |
