A high voltage generator supplies the photocathode, the electrodes of the electron beam deflection system and the mutually insulated portions (21,22) of the anode. The output screen (11) has a phosphor coating on the inside of a transparent plate under an Al film at anode potential. The anode portion (22) nearer to the photocathode is maintained at e.g. 30 kV. The distal portion (21) acts as a brake on the electron beam by virtue of its lower voltage, adjusted within the range of 5 to 25 kV. ADVANTAGE - High accelerating voltage is possible with thin phosphor coating for high optical gain.
