1,183,206. Phenylhydrazine and benzotriazole salts of substituted catechols. B.P. CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 8 Dec., 1967 [24 Dec., 1966], No. 57868/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises salts of the formula where X+ is a cation of the formulµ where R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl or aralkenyl radical and R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are hydrogen or halogen or alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl, aralkenyl or alkoxy radicals. The salts are prepared by reacting a substituted catechol with the appropriate phenylhydrazine or benzotriazole in an inert solvent, e.g. benzene, n-heptane. The group R<SP>1</SP> is preferably a C 4-12 radical attached to the aromatic ring by a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom, e.g. t-butyl, α-methylbenzyl or α,α-dimethylbenzyl. The salts are used as antioxidants for lubricant compositions (see Division C5). |
