A microwave oven includes a heating chamber (4), a plurality of cooking utensils 30-32, 44-47) detachably disposed in the heating chamber (4) selectively in accordance with the cooking contents, a plurality of heat sources (5, 6, 7) heating food placed on or contained in the cooking utensil (30-32, 44-47) and including a magnetron (5), an oven heater (6) and a grill heater (7), optical sensors (51-54, 56-58) detecting the cooking utensil (30-32, 44-47) disposed in the heating chamber (4), and a microcomputer (67). The cooking utensils (30-32, 44-47) include a glass dish (30), thawing gridiron (31), pot (32), upper and lower top plates (44, 45) rotative top plate (46), and gridiron (47). A microwave mode is selected when the detection of the optical sensors (51-54, 56-58) indicates that neither upper nor lower top plate (44, 45) is present in the heating chamber (4). A heater mode is selected when either upper or lower top plate (44, 45) is present. When the heater mode is selected on the basis of presence of the upper top plate (44), either an oven mode or a grill mode is selected depending upon presence or absence of the gridiron (47). One of the heat sources (5, 6, 7) in accordance with the selected cooking mode is controlled on the basis of a cooking program of the selected cooking mode by the microcomputer (67). <IMAGE>
