In a rotary machine for manufacturing envelopes and flat bags, pneumatically or hydraulically actuated double-acting pistons/cylinders 65, 73, 81 (91, Fig. 3) are provided to automatically move printing 8, 10 and adhesive 14, 30 (46, Fig. 3) applying mechanisms into and out of contact with the envelope blanks which pass through the machine from a stack 1, Fig. 2, along a path defined by the thick chain line to a collecting table (56, Fig. 3). The mechanisms may be moved sequentially as required upon a deliberate machine shutdown or simultaneously as required upon the occurrence of a fault resulting in the switching off of the main drive motor of the machine. The pistons may be controlled by three-way slide valves or by electric relay operated magnetic valves (102, 105, 108, Figs. 6, 7) connected to a relay (97, Figs. 6, 7) associated with the main drive motor of the machine. Switches (100, 101, Figs. 6, 7) responsive to the suction within the air line connected to a blank selector sucking device 4 are provided in the energizing lines of the relays associated with pistons 65, 73 and switches (104, 107, Figs. 6, 7) responsive to mechanical sensors 79 (80, Fig. 4), or photo-electric cells or fluidic elements are provided in the energizing lines of the relays associated with pistons 81, (91, Fig. 3). Pistons 65 move the ink rollers 62 of the printing mechanisms 8, 10 via a pivoting linkage 67, 66, 64, 63 connected to an indexing shaft 60, a lever 61 being provided for manual roller movement. Piston 73 raises and lowers the roller 15 associated with the mechanism 14 for applying adhesive around a window opening in an envelope via at least one lever 70 that may have extensions 78 which via screws 77 enables roller 18 to be raised and lowered. Piston 81 moves via a fork 83 and pin 84 the closure flap gumming mechanism 30 which is attached to a horizontally pivotable arm 33. The piston (91, Fig. 3) associated with the mechanism (46, Fig. 3) for applying adhesive to the folded side flaps may move the rollers (49, 47) thereof via a linkage as shown for mechanism 14 or may move a roller (49) thereof via a linkage comprising a fork (90), lever (89), cam (88) and tappet (93). The type cylinders 81, 101 may be arranged to be movable. A device 11 is provided for cutting the windows in the blanks.
