PURPOSE:To produce naphthoic acid useful as a raw material for polyester, etc., with simple and safe process, in high yield at a low cost on an industrial scale, by reacting naphthalene with a carboxylic acid and a peroxide in the presence of a palladium catalyst system. CONSTITUTION:Naphthalene and a carboxylic acid (preferably acetic acid, etc.) and a peroxide such as an organic peroxide (preferably tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, etc.) are charged dividedly to a reaction system in the presence of a palladium-based catalyst and made to react with each other at 20-200 deg.C under 0-50kg/cm<2>G pressure for 1-200hr to obtain naphthoic acid. the palladium-based catalyst is e.g. palladium acetate, palladium chloride, bisacetylacetonate palladium, palladium black, etc., which can be prepared e.g. by adsorption from a solution such as conventional aqueous solution, impregnation, immobilization, dry mixing, etc. the naphthalene used as a raw material is preferably a sufficiently purified compound to prevent side reactions. |
