A burner for generating hot gasses has a burner pipe (10) in which is arranged a nozzle (18) having in its front face (26) an outlet through which a jet of fuel (28) is ejected. A diaphragm (12) arranged next to the nozzle subdivides the burner pipe into an upstream pre-chamber (14) that receives the nozzle and a downstream combustion chamber (16). The diaphragm is provided with a central bore (30) for the jet of the fuel ejected through the outlet and with a plurality of openings that surround the passage in the diaphragm, through which combustion air passes from the pre-chamber into the combustion chamber. In order to improve such a burner so that no deposits form therein, an air gap (14) is arranged between the diaphragm and the nozzle, through which combustion air from the pre-chamber passes through the passage into the combustion chamber, and an edge of the passage is designed as a separating edge (34) for the combustion air that flows through the air gap.
