Alkylaryl sulfonic acids, exemplified by C9 to C15 alkylbenzene sulfonic acids, containing small proportions of alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acids, such as maleic anhydride, which function to inhibit formation of color-forming bodies in said sulfonic acids during processing, aging and/or heating thereof. The sulfonation of the alkylaryl hydrocarbons is carried out with sulfur trioxide, particularly in a liquid sulfur dioxide medium, and the alpha , beta -unsaturated carboxylic acids are advantageously added after the completion or substantial completion of the sulfonation reaction proper.
