1367894 Metal-air cells ENERGY CONVERSION Ltd 18 Oct 1971 [7 Jan 1971] 735/71 Heading H1B A cylindrical metal/air cell comprising central anode 11, Fig. 1, separator 12 and cathode 13 has, spaced from the cathode, a case 14 which prevents the passage of moisture but through which air can diffuse. The case comprises a rigid member 14a of metal or synthetic plastics with apertures 15 and an air-permeable layer 14b of P.T.F.E. or polythene. The thickness of the layer limits the rate of ingress of air to the cathode and hence the current output of the cell. Alternatively member 14a may be a mesh support inside or outside layer 14b. Figure 4 shows a case 40 having air-access apertures 41, 42 which are selectively sealed by strips 43 of gas-impermeable material, e.g. P.V.C. tape. In other embodiments the air access paths to the cathodes of cells not having a case 14 are restricted by wadding or diffusive seals. |
