<p>The present invention is directed to isolated cDNA sequences corresponding to alleles of the self-incompatibility locus (S-locus) in Brassica campestris and Brassica rapus ssp. rapifera. The cDNA code for glycoproteins which play a role in the self-incompatibility mechanism of Brassica species. The present invention also relates to a method for the isolation of other cDNAs and genes having homology to genes of the S-locus of Brassica species. The present invention also relates to the transformation of self-compatible plants into self-incompatible plants by the introduction of the cDNAs of the present invention into self-compatible (SC) plants, plant cells and/or protoplasts taken from self-compatible plants. The present invention also relates to a method for the rapid screening of seedlings for the presence of S-locus alleles.</p> |
