The fuel injector for use on diesel engines has a control rod (5) that is linearly displaced by an electromagnetic actuator (3) that has an armature (2) that applies a force to one end, while a mechanical spring applies a force to the other. The movement and position is dependent upon the current applied to the coil. The control rod has a number (4) that is detected by a sensor (7) located at a known position. When the sensor generates an output, the coil current is measured and stored in memory. This is then used in normal operation to produce repeatable positioning. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simplifies achievement of repeatable positioning of fuel control rod. No high precision sensors required. No costly control systems needed.
