摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain excellent responseness and high image directivity recognizing accuracy by recognizing a character head area character direction in an image information page area and then recognizing the image direction of image information. CONSTITUTION:An image processing unit 255 consists of an input part 600 for executing the handling of image data to/from a scanner 206, a rotational information register 601 for storing the degree of rotation of an original character image and a recognition part 602 for executing character recognition. The recognition part 602 inputs the character image, extracts its feature, forms a histogram of each direction code added to the outline part of the inputted character image and rearranges the histogram in accordance with the rotational angle of the inputted character to form a histogram corresponding to no rotation of the input character. The rotation and the histogram are collated with the contents of a dictionary and a recognized result is outputted. When discrepancy is detected as the result of collation, the value of the register 601 is changed, the histogram of the segmented character is rotated by 90 deg. to form a rotational histogram again and then collation with the recognition dictionary is executed.
