The compounds are of the general formula <CHEM> or <CHEM> where R1 is -OH, amino or -SH, R2 is H, alpha - or beta -naphthyl or optionally substituted phenyl, R3 is mono-, di- or tricycloalkyl of C6-16, optionally substituted, R4-7 are H or alkyl, R8-9 are alkyl or may form a 6-membered ring or a 5-membered ring with R6 and R7, R10 and R11 are alkyl, and n is 0 or an integer. Synthesis examples are given, and for the preparation of starting materials. Pharmaceutical compositions for oral, topical or injectable administration contain the compounds or their acceptable salts. The compounds have excellent antiviral activity as illustrated against herpes virus and may also be effective against influenza, DNA, RNA and HIV viruses.
