PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in a high yield while reducing by-products difficult to separate by reacting maleic anhydride with an aromatic primary amine in an organic solvent containing an aprotic polar solvent. CONSTITUTION:An acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid and an organic solvent containing an aprotic polar solvent such as DMF are together subjected to an azeotropic dehydration treatment, and maleic anhydride is reacted with an aromatic primary amine such as aniline in a molar ratio of 1:>=1 in the solvent under the refluxing of the organic solvent with removing the produced water to obtain a compound of the formula (R<1> to R<5> are H, halogen, nitro, OH, carboxy, 1-6C alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, sulfo). |
