PURPOSE:To accurately detect a main object by detecting a point for outputting an object at the shortest distance, out of respective points in the vicinity of the center of a picture and on a golden split line. CONSTITUTION:An object distance distribution detecting device 12 outputs out-of-focus information and object distance information corresponding to eighty- one areas obtained by dividing each of the length and breadth of the picture into nine equal parts. A main object detecting device 17 detects the point for outputting the object at the shortest distance, and decides whether the point is on the central part or the line for golden splitting the picture, in a photographic picture or not. When it is decided that the point is on the central part or the golden line, it is judged that the main object is on the point, and when it is decided that the point is not on the central part or the golden line, the detecting device 17 further, detects the point for outputting the object at the shortest distance, out of respective points in the vicinity of the center and on the golden split line in the picture and judges that the main object is on the point. |
