The timber is stacked in spaced layers, drying air being circulated between them. The air stream is provided by an axial fan (10) with an associated heating register (11) and is concentrated onto different areas of the stack, in a given time sequence, by altering the flow direction and/or by directing the flow. Pref. the air velocity profile is adjusted in dependence on the measured moisture content of the wood and/or the moisture profile measured at two or more spaced points. Pref. the actual air velocity is measured at one of the measuring points for the humidity.
