A method for disrupting cells comprises subjecting the cells to ultrasonic energy in the presence of beads. Pref. the frequency of the ultrasonic energy is greater than 20 Hz. The beads can be formed from e.g. glass, plastic, latex, crystals, metals, metal oxides, sand or silicates and pref. have diameters of 0.05-1 mm.
