To improve the broadband transmission of video signals at a high bit rate via a transmission channel with a predetermined but lower bit rate, clock pulses are gated out of the digitised video signal (V) in line sections which do not disadvantageously influence the picture content, particularly during the synchronisation pulse, a code value corresponding to these clock pulses is generated and also transmitted, and at the receiving end the number of clock pulses is determined from the code value and added again to the video signal (V<*>) transmitted in reduced manner.
