PURPOSE: To diffuse light and provide uniform lighting. CONSTITUTION: The improved fiber optical back lighting panel 10 provides uniform intensed backlighting for elements such as a rubber key pad, a film switch, a liquid crystal display, and a rigid panel. The fiber optical panel includes a light source and a layer of optical fibers 24 which are arrayed adjacently to one another and transmit light to different positions over all the elements, and then provide the efficient backlighting corresponding to the quantity of incident light. The optical fibers 24 terminate selectively at places where a series of chevron-shaped cuts 30 is formed in the layer of the optical fibers 24 by a laser according to a specific geometric zigzag or saw-tooth pattern stored in a computer memory. The zigzag pattern 31 extends to the overall length and width of the panel so as to give the intensed and consistent lighting to all of the elements by cutting each optical fiber 24 only once. |
