PURPOSE: To provide a display device capable of obtaining high contrast. CONSTITUTION: In a double cell, the d.Δn values of a practical cell 10 and a compensation cell 20 having a twisted angleϕin the reverse direction are selected so that these values are related to mutually different Gooch Tarry extreme values in prescribed wavelength. Since the thickness of a compensation layer can be more increased, the layer can be more simply obtained. Or, a universal type compensation cell can also be used.
