PURPOSE:To detect an air-fuel ratio correctly even in combustion condition close to a logical air-fuel ratio with a low oxygen partial pressure. CONSTITUTION:A second ion transmitting body 8 is baked to be porous forming pores as outflow passages communicating between a measuring electrode 9 and a reference electrode 10. Oxygen in a diffusion chamber 13 in contact with the measuring electrode 9 is ionized by electrons given by the measuring electrode 9 to be transported in order to the reference electrode 10 through oxygen defects in the second ion transmitting body 8, so the electrons are taken by the reference electrode 10 to be oxygen molecules, and they are returned into the diffusion chamber 13 through the pores in the second oxygen ion transmitting body 8. A higher oxygen partial pressure can thus be kept on the side of the reference electrode 10 than that inside the diffusion chamber 13, and the oxygen partial pressure in the diffusion chamber 13 is almost similar to the oxygen partial pressure of actual exhaust gas G. |
