PURPOSE:To obtain an optimum driving performance and exhaust emission controllability of an engine, by making comparison between the output period of an O2-sensor and a mapped optimum period at each condition of engine operation, and correcting the control gain of the PI value in case that deviation between the above two periods is detected. CONSTITUTION:Output signal of an O2-sensor 1 is applied to a control unit 5 via a wave-form shaping circuit 2, a multiplexer 3 and an A/D converter 4. The control unit 5 judges the air-fuel ratio from the output signal of the O2-sensor 1 and produces a pulse signal having a predetermined duty ratio by way of PI control. Since, with such an arrangement, the output period of the O2-sensor 1, i.e., the control gain is always self-controlled to an optimum value under any operational condition of an engine, it is enabled to obtain an optimum driving performance and exhaust emission controllability of an engine.
