PURPOSE:To eliminate the defective formation of a protective cylinder by rod burn and to execute satisfactory arc welding by forming a specific thickness layer of metallic carbonate ore bound by colloidal silica to the outside of the coating layer on a stainless steel coated electrode so that high-temp. drying is made possible. CONSTITUTION:The coating layer 3 consisting of the metallic carbonate ore bound by the colloidal silica is formed to 200-1,000mum thickness on the outside of the coating layer 2 cladding a stainless steel core wire 1. The coating layer 3 protects the layer 2. Drying at about 400 deg.C higher than conventional practice is executed without cracking and exfoliation, by which the moisture content is decreased. The generation of gaseous hydrogen and the drop-out of a flux are prevented in the stage of welding. The collapsion of the flux by the rod burn during heating up of the arbor in the stage of conducting electricity to the rod is prevented, by which the formation of the protective cylinder 4 is improved and the satisfactory welding is executed in a satisfactory gaseous atmosphere. The reason for limiting the thickness of the layer 3 lies in the purpose of forming the protective cylinder to the satisfactory length to eliminate trouble according to welding current conditions.
