A process for preparing an insulated metal wire with a melt-coated, adherent sheath of a polymer consisting essentially of the following repeat units: <IMAGE> <IMAGE> wherein n is 4 or 5; X is from 0.01 to 0.50; and Ar is at least one divalent aromatic radical selected from the group consisting of 1,3-phenylene, 1-methyl-2,4-phenylene and 3,4'-oxydiphenylene, comprising heating the bare wire to a temperature in excess of the Tg of the polymer and melt-coating the wire with the polymer. This produces an insulated wire that is stable to high temperatures and is resistant to water crazing, cracking and loss of coating.
