PURPOSE:To provide the subject active carbon to which microorganisms readily stick and the subject method for producing the active carbon. CONSTITUTION:The objective active carbon has the surface in which a gelatinous microbial immobilizing agent disperses and sticks. This active carbon is capable of sticking more microorganisms with hardly any reduction in specific surface area. For example, when the microorganisms having the ability to decompose ammonia stick to the active carbon, the ammonia is not only adsorbed in the active carbon but also decomposed with the microorganisms. Thereby, the ammonia can more effectively be removed. The active carbon can be produced by spraying its surface with the microbial immobilizing agent and then applying a crosslinking agent capable of gelatinizing the microbial immobilizing agent thereto. |
