PURPOSE:To produce a carbonic acid ester which is used as a synthetic intermediate of polymers, medicines and agrochemicals and as a solvent by reaction of an alcohol, carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In the presence of a catalyst of a copper compound such as cuprous or cupric halide or a composition thereof with a platinum group metal compound such as a Pd salt and an alkaline earth metal salt of a weak acid such as barium benzoate, an alcohol of 1-20 carbon atoms such as methanol is allowed to react with carbon monoxide and oxygen. The reaction is carried out under normal or elevated pressure in dilution with an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon gas at 20-250 deg.C, as the partial pressures of carbon monoxide and oxygen are kept at 0.1-30 atmospheric pressure and 0.05-10 atmospheric pressure respectively. The reaction rate is increased and the plant size can be miniaturized advantageously. |
