The invention relates to a method for adjusting the coating width of web material in a film press for coating material, in which the web W that is to be coated, such as a paper or cardboard web or the like, is made to run through a roll nip N that is formed by rolls 1, 2 of the press, films F of coating material being spread out over the surface of the rolls 1, 2 in the press by means of coating units 10, 10a, at least partially over a width that is greater that the web width. The said films F are transferred to the web W in the roll nip N, that fraction going beyond the web width of the film F being scraped off the surface of the rolls 1, 2 by edge scrapers 30 before ahead of the roll nip N. In the method the position of the edges E of the web W is measured before the roll nip N and control signals corresponding to the measured data are relayed to the adjusting devices 33 for the edge scrapers 30 in order to shift the edge scrapers 30 to a position, which is essentially assumed by the edges E of the web W, in order to scrape off excess coating material from the surface of the rolls 1, 2 before it reaches the roll nip N. The invention also relates to an arrangement intended for performing the method. <IMAGE>
