PURPOSE:To easily execute exact drive not to excess turn-on or turn-on miss by extending the voltage margin of drive after suppressing the luminance reduction of display. CONSTITUTION:Discharging is generated at the rise edge of a discharge maintenance pulse PX, and wall charges starts being stored. With the storage of wall charges, a cell voltage is lowered and at a prescribed time point, discharging is stopped. Pulse width tx of the discharge maintenance pulse PX is set at 5-10mus, for example, and therefore, a plane discharge cell stores wall charges sufficient for surely generating discharging later. Continuously to the discharge maintenance pulse PX, a discharge maintenance pulse PY having pulse width ty (ty<tx) narrower than that of the discharge maintenance pulse PX is selectively impressed to the side of each electrode Y for each segment corresponding to a figure to be displayed. After the discharge maintenance pulses PX and PY are completely impressed prescribed times, an erase pulse PD is impressed to the side of an electrode X continuously to the final discharge maintenance pulse PY.
